I Really Thought This MCU Character From 3 Years Ago Would Have Returned By Now

Picture

Since the end of the MCU's Infinity Saga, the franchise has shifted focus to the multiverse, making it all the more confusing that one character who made their debut in 2022 still hasn't shown up again. To date, they've only appeared in one MCU project and have been missing from the cinematic saga ever since.

2022 was a fairly dense year for the MCU, with three movies and two TV shows among the projects added to the canon. Most of these projects included at least one MCU debutant, and almost all of them have shown up again since. The biggest exception perhaps makes the least sense, considering the franchise's post-Endgame priorities.

America Chavez Still Hasn't Returned Since 2022's Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness

America Chavez in Doctor Strange 2
Xochitl Gomez appeared as America Chavez in the second Doctor Strange movie, with her reality-hopping powers serving as the cornerstone of the movie's plot. The multiverse has been at the forefront of the MCU's larger storyline in recent years. As such, it seemed like Multiverse of Madness was setting America up as a vital, recurring figure. As of yet, she has not shown up again.

Gomez's character was last seen in the final moments of Multiverse of Madness, learning how to wield the Mystic Arts at Kamar-Taj after opting to remain in the MCU's main universe. Considering she is already incredibly powerful, the concept of her also learning to use magic gives her the possibility of becoming one of the strongest characters in the multiverse. But, as I've already said, Multiverse of Madness remains her sole appearance.

The MCU Has Missed A Perfect Chance To Bring America Back

No other MCU project captures the essence of the Multiverse Saga more perfectly than What If...?. While the show's title suggests the animated show consists of a string of hypothetical scenarios, each episode is actually a glimpse into a different reality in the franchise's canon. It started in 2021, and so wouldn't have been able to effectively introduce America Chavez. However, seasons 2 and 3 provided her with a shot at more MCU appearances.

One of the most interesting traits of Gomez's character is that she has zero multiversal variants. There is only one America Chavez, and she spends much of her existence jumping through alternate realities. You would think this would make her the perfect character to appear in various episodes of What If...?, but that never factored into the show's plans. It ended in late 2024, so that ship has sailed.

There Is Still Time For America Chavez's MCU Return

Picture
There are two landmark MCU movies on the way. The first is 2026's Avengers: Doomsday, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Both are expected to be massive crossover events that bring together cinematic Marvel characters from before and after the Disney deal. America is rumored to appear in both, but her presence hasn't been officially announced or confirmed.

With the number of realities expected to be involved in both movies, it would be logical to include America Chavez in the plot of Doomsday, Secret Wars, or both. Even with the reports of Secret Wars softly rebooting the MCU, America's ability to hop between universes makes her ongoingly relevant in a way that can't be said of many other characters within the franchise.
