Batman Vs. Superman Is Happening Again In 2027 (But With A Twist)

2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice failed to live up to what sounded like a compelling concept on paper, but the DC franchise is preparing to make the two characters fight it out again for big-screen supremacy. James Gunn's DCU timeline is pretty short at the moment, but he has a pretty solid roadmap when it comes to what he has in store for superhero fans.
Batman has already made an appearance in the DCU. However, in a strange quirk, no one has actually physically portrayed the character since Ben Affleck, Michael Keaton, and George Clooney shared the role in 2023's The Flash. In a far more straightforward affair, David Corenswet is currently the only one donning the famous red cape and made his DCU debut as Superman's title character in 2025. Regardless, both superheroes will be going head-to-head in 2027 for the second time in just over a decade, but it'll be a little different this time around.

The Batman Part II & Man Of Tomorrow Are Both Scheduled To Be Released In 2027
Okay, so the battle between Batman and Superman won't actually take place on the big screen this time around, but rather at the box office. James Gunn's Superman follow-up, Man of Tomorrow, has a release date of July 9th, 2027. Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II will hit cinemas three months later on October 1st. With the protagonist of each movie constantly overtaking the other as DC's most beloved superhero, both projects are sure to be profitable endeavors.
Personally, I'm looking forward to the contest between Man of Tomorrow and The Batman Part II far more than I am willing to watch Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman again. The movie wasn't completely without merit, and the extended edition was certainly an improvement, but it ultimately came off as an overly broody affair with a cool action sequence that was cut short for an impossibly corny reason.

The Sad Truth Of Batman & Superman's Cinematic "Rematch"
DC fans won't be able to see David Corenswet and Robert Pattinson exchanging blows in 2027. Not only that, but these two versions of the characters will probably never even cross paths. Although they both factor massively into DC's future plans, they're also set in different universes. Man of Tomorrow will extend the DCU timeline, and The Batman Part II will flesh out its own self-contained reality that started with the 2022 effort and was continued in 2024 with The Penguin season 1.
While Gunn is overseeing Reeves' Batman universe in his role as the co-head of DC Studios, he seems content with letting Reeves just get on with things, with no desire to integrate The Batman or its sequel into the main DCU timeline. So, expect another actor to play the Dark Knight when he inevitably shows up in a future project set within the same reality as Man of Tomorrow.
Inversely, Reeves doesn't appear interested in venturing beyond Gotham City in his Batman projects, despite the odd tease that heroes other than Pattinson's character do exist. As such, I doubt his smaller cinematic universe will ever find itself needing an actor to play Superman. It's just enough to accept that he's out there somewhere. So, the only REAL possibility of another on-screen showdown between Batman and Superman is in Gunn's DCU, but I'd be fine if that clash never happened again.
