James Gunn's Creature Commandos Season 2 Role Proves How Quickly The DCU Is Expanding

Rick Flag Sr. saluting in Creature Commandos

By Dan Bibby

October 28th, 2025
Creature Commandos season 2 is confirmed to be on the way, but a key piece of behind-the-scenes trivia quietly cements the immense speed with which the DCU timeline is growing. Creature Commandos season 1 was the first official entry into James Gunn's rebooted DC cinematic universe, although certain projects from before the animated show's debut do help inform the current continuity.

Gunn's decision to start the DCU with Creature Commandos season 1 brought the canon status of Peacemaker season 1 and 2016's The Suicide Squad into question. However, the simple explanation is that newcomers to the franchise should probably streamline proceedings and begin with Creature Commandos. This provides the least amount of confusion overall.

The DCU is still in its infancy, although Gunn has a detailed roadmap of upcoming projects that will add to the canon in significant ways. Gunn has also explained that not every project will have the same tone, as can often be the case in the MCU. For instance, 2026's Clayface will be a straight-up horror movie, whereas 2027's Man of Tomorrow will likely be far more similar to 2025's Superman. The sheer size of Gunn's operation is forcing him to make a key sacrifice for Creature Commandos season 2 and beyond.

James Gunn Isn't Writing Creature Commandos Season 2

Every entry into the DCU that's been released so far has just one writer: James Gunn. The co-head of DC Studios has been hard at work making sure to provide the foundation for his rebooted universe, penning the scripts for Superman, every episode of Peacemaker season 2, and every episode of Creature Commandos season 1. However, Creature Commandos season 2 will be written by a writers' room (via BleedingCool), not by James Gunn.

Because the DCU has been making a gradual and measured debut, it makes sense that Gunn would have the time to dedicate so much of his time to writing every project to date. Going forward, it's just not realistic to expect that trend to continue. Not only would it go against Gunn's plan to make movies and TV shows of differing tones and genres, but fans would be waiting an incredibly long time between projects if the entire burden of writing them rested solely on James Gunn's shoulders.

That said, Gunn is still credited as an executive producer on Creature Commandos season 2, which doesn't yet have a release date. So, I'm not too worried about the show's continuation feeling all that different from its inaugural run. Gunn will still surely have a great deal of input into the finished product as the franchise's overseer, even if he isn't physically writing every word himself.

The Next DCU Project Also Won't Be Written By James Gunn

Guy in Superman
Although there are various other DCU projects in the pipeline, Lanterns season 1 and the Supergirl movie are expected to be at the front of the line. While neither has a confirmed release date, the fact that they're most likely to arrive next means the first DCU project not written by James Gunn is right around the corner. The Supergirl screenplay will be penned by Ana Nogueira (The Vampire Diaries, The Blacklist).

Lanterns season 1 is a collaborative effort between Tom King (Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic), Damon Lindelof (Lost, Watchmen show), and Chris Mundy (Criminal Minds, Ozark). However, as with Creature Commandos season 2, expect Gunn to have a lot of creative input with both Lanterns and Supergirl. Whichever one arrives first, we'll soon have a glimpse into what the DCU will look like without Gunn writing every single word.
