Apple TV+ Quietly Wrapped Filming On A Continuation Of My Favorite Sci-Fi Novel

As a huge sci-fi nerd, Apple TV+ is something of a paradise for me. The platform is filled with space operas, multiverse sagas, and stories built on other famous tropes within the genre. While there's certainly no shortage of original programming on Apple TV+, there's also plenty of live-action adaptations of smash hit sci-fi novels.
However, there's one project in particular that blurs the line between those two categories. While a 2016 book was used as the source material for a run of episodes back in 2024, Apple TV+ is actually gearing up to flesh out the novel's world in a surprising way.

Dark Matter Season 2 Wrapped In Late July 2025
First published in 2016, Blake Crouch's Dark Matter went on to become a New York Times bestseller. It tells the story of a brilliant scientist named Jason Dessen, played in the adaptation by Joel Edgerton. After surrendering his career goals in favor of family life, Jason starts to think about what another version of life could have been like, and he finds out the hard way as he's forced through a dark multiversal journey.
As with most Apple TV+ sci-fi shows, I don't hear enough people talking about Dark Matter. The novel is truly spectacular, but the show is an incredibly rare example of the adaptation surpassing the quality of its source material. Dark Matter season 2 has now wrapped, and author-turned-showrunner Blake Crouch has confirmed the show is entering a post-production process expected to last around six months.
Why It's So Cool That Dark Matter Season 2 Is Happening
It's not unheard of for the events of a single book to form the basis of more than one season of television. That isn't what's happened with Dark Matter, though. Season 1 adapted every inch of the 2016 novel, and even added additional characters and storylines that felt incredibly authentic to the source material. That said, this level of consistency isn't surprising considering Blake's involvement in both versions of the story.
So, while Dark Matter season 1 ends in the same place as the book, the show provides several new loose ends that will be explored when season 2 arrives. Considering how faithfully the book was adapted for season 1, it's not at all inaccurate to say that Dark Matter season 2 is Apple TV+'s sequel to the novel I've loved for so many years.
