BIG LITTLE LIES (2017)
(MYSTERY / CRIME / DRAMA)
CREATOR - DAVID E KELLEY
STARRING - NATALIE PORTMAN, REESE WITHERSPOON, LAURA DERN
This is one for the ladies out there.
I'd heard the name when browsing through the list of most 'trending' shows. To judge a book by its cover, I'd say it had the look of a run of the mill stepford wives/suburban drama, but I was intrigued all the same due to the quality cast. After all, it starred Nicole kidman, Reese Witherspoon [Although we never got to see the spoon - EDITOR], Laura Dern and the fact it's wrapped up in one season made up of 7 episodes was very appealing. Something that is very rare amongst American shows. This meant it was easy to digest in the weeknight evenings when I've got the telly to myself.
What's it about? The show starts with snippets of police interviews with local people who are all reeling from a murder in their lovely, gossip driven, bitchy, beachside town. The following episodes are the unravelling stream of events that are heading to the final crime scene that opened the first episode. We follow a group of 'moms' and what they're all going through. Their friendship, families, lust, desire, relationships and being a mother. The protection we all naturally feel towards our babies, whether we're stay at home mums or working mums, and dealing with the pressures of doing either.
Reese witherspoon really steals the show on the acting side of things playing Madeline. Honestly she truly owns every scene she features in. In fact all three of the leading lady characters are authentic and charming. The writing is witty, sassy, clever and dark in places whilst staying funny, fresh and retaining an amount of originality. The black comedy style leaves you open and vulnerable to the hard hitting issues of abuse, rape and bullying. Oh and beware.. in true HBO fashion these scenes are graphic, not for the faint hearted.
The icing on the cake is the soundtrack. Every episode is jammed packed with a glorious soulful treat for your ears and really suits the feel of the show. There's even some elvis thrown in for good measure.
To summarise... this show is fantastic. So go on, what are you waiting for? Get your feet up with a brew. We deserve it girls
