@mandaglorian is our Cosplay of the Week Winner. Here's an interview with Gambit herself:
What motivated you to do this cosplay?
Gambit has always been my favourite of the X-MEN, and I hadn't seen too many people cosplay him, so I decided to revamp one of my original cosplays with my new skills for NYCC2017 to see how far I've come. And I'm working on Gambit 3.0 since it got an overwhelmingly positive reception. What is the best and worst part of this costume? |
People's reactions have by far been the best part. I never expected to get the recognition I have from it, I've even had people come up to me at conventions or message me remembering me by that cosplay, which is just a fantastic feeling after putting work into something and having people truly appreciate it.
The worst part about it is how warm it is though. And the headpiece is quite uncomfortable unfortunately. The first day at NYCC that I wore it I didn't have the ears cut out properly and it was so tight that my ears were bright red and aching by the middle of the day.

How long have you been doing this?
Since 2013, but I started off very simple. I picked cosplays that I could just put together with things I could find online or in thrift stores, then I started to look for things I could just alter and modify for various cosplays. Such as my first few iterations of Black Widow, and then in 2016 I started to slowly teach myself how to make things myself from leather, foam, worbla etc
What was your first cosplay?
I started off pretty simple. I made/put together Psylocke and a somewhat casual Catwoman for two cosplay meetups around the same time to get a feel for it because I had my heart set on putting Gambit together for New York Comic Con 2013, which was the very first time I debuted Gambit.

Who's your biggest inspiration?
I definitely have a few! Kamuicosplay, Yaya Han, the ladies of Cowbuttcrunchies, Becka Noel, and of course Jessica Nigri. Not only are they talented, but they genuinely enjoy the craft and helping others learn. But besides the big guns, I have quite a few friends (livicolecosplay, rincosplaynyc, infinitepolygoncosplay, ohrocco and paulmight to name a few) who are truly inspirational and have done so much with a fraction of the years of experience.
And what's the best cosplay you've ever seen yourself?
Cowbuttcrunchies Helga. They just won the crown championship of cosplay at C2E2 and I had the opportunity to see it at Katsucon this year and they somehow even improved upon what was already an impeccably made cosplay. The level of intricacy is so astounding you can even tell just how detailed it is from afar!
