This week we have double trouble for you! Both @SparkyCosplays & @Divarogue won our Cosplay of the Week with their amazing Asterix & Obelix ( & Dogmatix) cosplay. Seeing as JB is a massive fan of those old comics, it was obvious that they both had to walk away with the title. JB had the GAUL to ask them a few questions, thankfully they answered:
What motivated you to make this particular cosplay?
SparkyCosplays/Asterix:
Well, Laura/DivaRogue said, "So I'm making Obelix from 'Asterix'," and I yelled at her and begged her to let me be her Asterix! I read the comics growing up with my dad, so they hold a soft spot in my heart.
How long have you been doing this DivaRogue?
I really started cosplay about two and a half years ago now. What I consider to be my first cosplay is the 'Just Breathe' dress, Danielle De Barbarac wore from 'Ever After'. I was always into dress up and did throw together a quick 'Jack Frost' costume the year before, but that dress was the first one I made entirely from scratch. I was always a tomboy growing up, and yet I dreeeeeamed of having that dress since the first time I watched the movie, and more so in every rewatch. So I knew I had to start with my ultimate dream dress. I entered into the novice section of New Zealand main Con's (Armagedeon Expo) cosplay competition and came away with 'Best in Show'. Everything has kind of snowballed since then. I've basically been working my way through all my dream characters I love, never just because I think it looks cool.

What was your first cosplay SparkyCosplays?
TenTen from Naruto Shippuden, my mum helped me make it. It was basic as fuck, but I was so happy wearing it and got so many high fives and hugs from people that loved her. It was an amazing experience that sunk me into this hobby forever. How long have you been Cosplaying? I've been cosplaying for nearly nine years now, but I had a break after the first couple years and have been making cosplays that are more focused on the details and creative liberties for three years now. What's the best and worst parts of your costumes? People's genuine reactions of love for the characters is amazing. I thought no one would recognise the characters, which didn't bother me, because it would have just been a fun day of awesomeness as wicked characters with my amazing friend, but [Asterix] turned out to be one of my most popular cosplays which I find hilarious. Also, wearing a moustache just instantly makes your day amazing and hilarious! |
The worst part was that I wish had given myself one whole month to make it and not 1 week! I could've gone SO EXTRA on the details. Or at least put a clip on the helmet so the helmet didn't fall off my head constantly!
What's your biggest inspiration?
DivaRogue: I don't think I can really answer that to be honest. Everything. I get really inspired by extreme detail and people who make the entire thing from scratch, so anything like that gets me excited.
SparkyCosplays: My biggest inspiration? Well, they're not actually cosplayers! There's Angela Clayton who just teaches me SOOO much about sewing and making patterns, I wouldn't understand half of what I do now without her. And then there's the costume designers that did the costume for Naruto the Live Spectacle, and how they brought those 2D designs to life, I'm forever inspired by them and it shows in my Ninjas.

What's the best cosplay you've ever seen?
SparkyCosplays: I don't think there's one single cosplayer that could hold this title. I meet people regularly that have poured their heart and soul into making a character come to life and I always run up and yell compliments at them, and then scuttle away with my mind absolutely blown at how such perfection could just walk around! |
I don't care about who does the best "whatever", I just care about how people obviously care about a character or its design, and have blatantly spent HOURS on making their dream a reality. And if a bitch is walking around with embroidery THEN YOU KNOW I'm getting all up in those details and drooling for a bit!
What's your dream character to cosplay?
SparkyCosplays: It's currently Samurai Naruto, but I REFUSE to make him unless I win the preliminary round of MNCC Auckland because he's going to be SUCH A MISH to make.
Bonus question; I'm a massive fan of the books, which was your favourite Asterix book/story?
SparkyCosplays: It's been so long since I read any of them, but the one that still holds a soft spot for me is Asterix and Cleopatra. I can't remember certain book titles, but I was an ancient history geek so I read the Cleopatra one over and over!
