ROCKETMAN (2019)
Director: Dexter Fletcher
Stars: Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell Rating: 5 out of 10 After the success story of 'BO RAP' last year, along comes another biopic of a behemoth of music history!
The story of Elton John promised much but I feel we were sold short in an overly cheesy musical which, rather than tell the story of Elton in a conventional way, seemed only to want to use his songs and shoe horn them in to meaning 'something' in the film! Maybe we should always have been expecting this film to go down this way, perhaps it was in its very essence perfect in fitting the personality of the flamboyant Elton John, yet I couldn’t help but feel using a full musical approach to scenes of his upbringing and having a whole show of characters burst into song belonged far more on the stage in the west end or broadway, than it did coming from a cinema screen. |
That’s not to say it wasn’t without some merit, the music of Elton John is fantastic so having that throughout is joyous, and Taron Eggerton's performance was actually very good throughout, and the relationship he shared with Bernie, his writing partner, came across fantastic.
However, the negatives were very apparent. Scenes which seemed to fail at trying to convey special moments and messages littered the film. As previously mentioned the outbursts into musical theatre just didn’t work for me and came across as far too much and I don’t really feel I know any more about Elton John after watching it. It skims fast across many moments of his life. Oh, and his wife? Blink and you'll miss her!
Overall I give this half musical half rock biopic a fairly underwhelming 5, it’s ok. It’s pleasant to watch once but I honestly would never go back to it again!
